This document contains speech commands that apply to Windows Speech Recognition. The left column is an alphabetical listing of actions to be taken on a computer or symbols that may be used. The right column contains the words to be spoken to perform that action or enter that symbol.
This listing uses a set of protocols designed to help you understand what is being displayed. [Words in brackets in bold print such as this are commands to the computer to do something.] For example, the "start listening" command that might be included in a script or vocabulary display would show as [start listening]. Words that are not highlighted, such as this, are information for the user. For example, a display such as [say the number shown for the close button] would tell the user to look at the close button and speak the number superimposed on that button.
Dictation is not active in the DOS Command function within Windows; however, from the DOS prompt the Speech Recognition command [Start Typing] can be used and characters can be inserted into the DOS window. Some, but not all, speech commands can be used in the DOS window. For example [backspace] has the same effect as in Windows; however, [undo that] results in ^Z being displayed.
This listing can be searched using a keyboard by pressing and holding down the Control (ctrl) key and pressing the F key, followed by typing the desired word or words in the Find box and pressing the Enter key. Using Speech Recognition, this listing can be searched by saying [Press][Control][F as in Foxtrot] followed by dictating the desired word or words into the Find box and then saying [Press][Enter]. If the desired search result is not displayed, [Press][Enter] can be repeated until the desired result is found or a display indicates it cannot be found. This listing can be open while using Speech Recognition, put out of the way by saying [Minimize], brought back to the screen by saying [Switch to INTERNET EXPLORER], and searched using [Press][Control][F as in Foxtrot].
Note: Commands may not work in all applications or may work differently in different applications. Many applications have their own keyboard shortcut keys. These can be found by using the Help feature of the application and searching for "keyboard shortcuts" in the Help Index. Say Press before saying the desired keyboard shortcut words while using the application.
